Getting there
from Stanstead airport (sorry, my only experience) are different ways to the city center. The Stanstead Express train takes 45 minutes but costs 15 pounds and 25 pounds the return ticket. Ryanair sells these tickets in the plane for 20 pounds (or 28 Euro). Cheaper is the bus from Terravision, which costs 8 pounds to Liverpool Street 14 pounds return and takes 45-80 minutes, which depends on the traffic. In peak off times Stanstead Express also use a bus from Liverpool Street back to Stanstead.

lowcostcoach.com (terravision),
Trains arrive and stop either at the western Liverpool Street Station or at the eastern Victoria Station .

Transport
the system has changened in 2007 and is now a bit more complicated.

Underground
In London you can use taxis, the underground (metro) or busses.

An underground ticket costs 4 pounds and you can change the line until you leave the suburban system. There are day tickets for 6,60 pounds (Zone 1-3 costs 7,80 pounds), three day tickets for 16,40 (Zone 1-2), one week 23,20 (zone 1-2 / till 43,00 Zone 1-6, day card 2-6 is 8,00)  and tickets for Sunday, Saturday or on working days at after 9.30 a.m. for 5,10  per day.
On some routes you can pay less, if you buy an Oyster card, but you have to pay 3 pounds for the card. The best deal for visitors are day or three days tickets. You can buy also a day boat ticket for 10,50. Children pay about the half price. Only some slight discount for families of two adults and 2 or 3 kids. It is getting all a bit complicated in 2007. You can ask at Liverpool Tube or Victoria Rail station for more details.

day ticket 6,60 Pds. (Zone 1), 7,80 (Zone 1-3), 8 Pds (Zone 2-6), 10, 50 boat
three days 16,40 Pds. (Zone 1-2),
seven days 23,20 (Zone 1-2), 43 Pds (Zone 1-6)

Bus
London Bus  Bus Stop
Bus is cheaper than the underground. A bus ticket costs 2 pounds and is only valied for one bus drive, it is getting void after leaving the bus. You can buy 6 tickets for 6,-- in shops. A day bus ticket for using all lines costs 3,50 pounds and 14 pounds a week. In my opinion it is the best way to explore London, it takes longer than the metro and finding the line for your station is more complicated, but you have fantastic views to the city life on the upper deck of the London double decker busses.

single ticket 2 Pds./ 6 ticket pack  6 Pds. from tabacco shops

You can ask at Liverpool Tube, Piccadilly Circus,Victoria Rail station or Heathrow Terminal for more details and free maps.

Taxi / Cab

Cab
rather expensive, slower as the metro and quicker as the bus, but the cabbie knows London.

Accommodation
London isn't cheap, if you want to have a single or double room with English breakfast. There are some discount offers that depend on time of stay.
Cheap accommodation are available at hostels in dorm rooms. I slept very well in a hostel near the Hyde Park for app. 20 Euro per night. This included a breakfast buffet (bread, butter, marmelade and tea and coffee) in the kitchen. Some hostels are a bit dingy, but there are some nice one.
It is recommended to book the room per internet (even from london), the staff often is instructed to sell you the more expensive beds, even if the cheaper dorm beds are free, if you come without booking.

Food
You find all kind of food in London. Menus are offered from around 10 pounds, sometimes less. The best price value are Indian buffets (all you can eat) starting from 7 pounds. In Chinatown also Chinese buffets were available for 5 pounds. The prices on the menu are often without a service charge and tax, add 20 per cent to the listed prices.

Internet
Internet cafes were rather cheap, starting from 50 cents per hour. Others were more expensive. A middle price was 1 pound/hour.
