"Beijing" means "Northern Capital". Before the capital was moved to Beijing in the 15th century by the Ming emperor Yongle, "Nan Jing" = ("Southern Capital") was the capital of China. In the last century the old quarters were torn down and reset by modern buildings. Also the suburbs are dominated by high-rise tenement blocks today.
Despite that fact, Beijing has many parks and cultural sights yet, included two absolut topics of the word culture heritage, the Emperors Palace also called Forbidden City and in less than 100 km distance the Great Wall.
